Blog Series: The Internet’s Environmental Impact.

Today, I got to publish part 1 of this series, focusing on estimating the internet’s carbon footpringt at large. I look at social media, online advertising, video streaming, connected devices, and artificial intelligence to get a sense of the scale of emissions that can be attributed to the internet. My calculations get me to around 4-7% of annual global emissions, which is no doubt significant.

This will also be the baseline upon which, I’ll be thinking through what we can do to understand, reduce and mitigate the internet’s impact over the next few weeks. Future posts will look at regulation, change management in businesses, and future narratives to help shift mindsets.

Feedback definitely welcome: Part 1.
